Design Excellence

Creative Best Practices

These guidelines will help your ad stand out and perform better on our screens.

Safe Areas & Key Information

  • Keep all important text and logos in the center 80% of the screen
  • Avoid placing text in the bottom 10% - this area is reserved for the ticker
  • Avoid the very top 5% as well - keep key content away from edges
  • Test your design on actual screens if possible

Typography & Readability

  • Minimum font size: 36px for body text (readable from 10+ meters away)
  • Headlines: 72px or larger for maximum impact
  • Use bold, sans-serif fonts (Helvetica, Arial, Roboto) for legibility
  • Contrast is critical - use dark text on light backgrounds or vice versa
  • Avoid thin fonts and light colors that wash out on bright screens

Color & Contrast

  • Use high-contrast colors for text and backgrounds
  • Avoid pure black backgrounds (can cause screen glare) - use dark gray (#222)
  • White, yellow, and orange stand out best for calls-to-action
  • Test colors on multiple screens - monitors and TVs render differently
  • Avoid overly saturated colors that can look harsh on high-brightness displays

Motion & Duration

  • Keep animations smooth and engaging - 3-10 second loops work best
  • Avoid flashing more than 3 times per second (can be harmful)
  • Start with your most compelling visual - you have 2 seconds to grab attention
  • For video: include a clear call-to-action in the final 2 seconds
  • Test on actual playback systems for timing accuracy

Images & Video Quality

  • Use high-resolution images (minimum 1920x1080 for stills)
  • Compress video efficiently without losing quality (use H.264 codec)
  • Avoid interlaced video - always use progressive scan
  • Check for codec compatibility: H.264/AVC is the safest bet
  • Product photos: shoot in good lighting and use professional quality

Content & Messaging

  • Your headline should tell the story in 1 second
  • Limit text to 3-5 lines maximum
  • Focus on one clear call-to-action per ad (e.g., "Visit us" or "Order now")
  • Use local language and cultural references when relevant
  • Include your contact info, location, or offer - but keep it scannable

Design Examples

Good vs. bad design on digital screens

✓ Good Design

  • Clear headline (72px+) in top third
  • Product image centered
  • Call-to-action in safe zone
  • High contrast between elements
  • Minimal text, maximum impact

✗ Avoid This

  • Small text (below 36px) - unreadable
  • Critical info in ticker zone (bottom 10%)
  • Cluttered layout with too much text
  • Low contrast - text blends with background
  • Flashing or excessive motion
